An efficient numerical technique, originated by MacCormack, is used to predict temperature distributions in one-dimensional flow through a finite length packed bed. The method allows for temperature dependent properties, time varying inlet conditions, and nonuniform initial conditions. A thorough comparison with the classical Schumann model is presented, along with other examples which demonstrate the versatility of the numerical method. Calculations are also compared with results obtained from an experimental study of a pebble-bed thermal energy storage device.
