A study of marine reduction gear design over the past 15 years and an indication of future development of marine propulsion gearing for gas tubine plants are presented. Emphasis is placed on those design considerations that relate to gas turbine installation: gearing arrangement, reversing mechanisms, and use and location of clutches and brakes. Comparison tabulations include weight analyses and gear rating influencing factors. Also included is a study of the marine gear-rating method and adaption to gas turbine operating characteristics with service factor chart for river craft, merchant and naval ships.
