H Norman Abramson

H. Norman Abramson was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1926. He attended Stanford University, graduating with BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering in 1950 and 1952, respectively, and then received a PhD from the University of Texas in 1956. His professional career (35 years) was spent mostly at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. Norm joined SwRI in 1956 as manager of the engineering analysis section. He progressed to Vice President of the Engineering Sciences Division, which under his leadership grew from a group of about 25 to well over 200. As Executive Vice President, Norm transformed SwRI’s internal research program from an ignored step-child to a vital role in maintaining the Institute’s position as one of the leading non-profit contract R&D organizations in the world; he also oversaw the growth of SwRI to a staff of over 2500.
